Vocational Training

Our vocational training programs are geared towards young people aged 18-24 who are interested in the building trades. 

We have two different training programs to accommodate students with or without a high school diploma. Both training programs offer a bi-weekly stipend for participating.

Building Trades Exploration (BTE) Program

This 6-9 month academic and building trades program is geared towards young people aged 18-24 who do not have a high school diploma. Program participants gain exposure to the fields of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, and facilities maintenance while earning a bi-weekly stipend. 

Our training programs award students with the credentials necessary to secure entry level building trades positions and apprenticeships including:

  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Lead Safe Certification
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • 2A/1C Hoisting Training
  • Signalperson Rigger Certifications
  • Building Envelope Training

Students are also expected to participate in weekly community service activities. Successful participants are eligible for dual enrollment at local community colleges and can move on to advanced training or entry-level jobs in the field.


Pre-Apprentice (PA) Program

This 12 week vocational training program is geared towards students aged 18-24 who are interested in starting a career in the building trades, and who already have their high school diploma or equivalent. Students spend the first three weeks of the program at our Assessment Center at Roxbury Community College, where they complete an introduction to building trades course and gain a number of credentials. The remaining 10 weeks involve field experience and life-skills training to ensure that participants are ready for employment in the field upon graduation. All students earn a bi-weekly stipend for participating.

Successful graduates apply to union apprenticeship programs or gain entry level placements in the building trades. Employer partners include Suffolk Construction, Shawmut Construction, Skanska Construction, Placetailor Design/Build, and CLP trades staffing company. Students also gain leadership in service skills and receive opportunities to become AmeriCorps members and earn a $1,400.00 Educational Award.


Boston Trades Assessment Center (BTAC) at Roxbury Community College

The BTAC houses our 3-week introduction to building trades course at Roxbury Community College. During this introductory course, participants will earn:

  • OSHA 10
  • Lead Safe Certification
  • First Aid/CPR
  • 2A/1C Hoisting Training
  • Signalperson Rigger Certifications

Successful participants will receive a completion bonus and be eligible to enroll in the remaining 10 weeks of YouthBuild Boston's Pre-Apprentice program.
