On Saturday, November 19th, 24 volunteers from YouthBuild Boston and the US Green Building Council MA chapter gathered for a day of service in an effort to reduce heating costs and provide a warmer, healthier season for some of Boston’s most vulnerable citizens.
cThe group of volunteers winterized the home of 12 low-income elderly Boston residents in partnership with the Ecumenical Social Action Committee, who referred several of their low-income senior clients for this project.
The volunteers served residents in:
- Jamaica Plain
- Hyde Park
In addition to eliminating cold winter drafts, the winterization techniques that the group implemented are expected to reduce the homes’ energy costs by 20-30% annually.
By volunteering alongside young people who participate in YouthBuild Boston’s vocational training programs, USGBC volunteers helped YBB students bolster their classroom learning with field experience training.
Since the event, YBB students and volunteers have used these new skills to winterize their own homes and the homes of their friends and neighbors in need.
All YBB students earn a community service certificate by engaging in meaningful service opportunities that promote leadership development and social responsibility, and participating in service events alongside volunteers from our corporate and community partners provides an opportunity for an inter-generational learning experience that benefits the entire group. YBB hopes to have the chance to work with the USGBC again in the future!
